Each year we send our team on a mission to find the best art opportunities, grants, and calls-for-entry for the upcoming year.

And, even though 2022 may already be throwing us yet another curveball before the year has even officially begun, there are still many opportunities on the horizon for artists if you know where to look.

That's why we make it as easy as possible for artists to find the right opportunity for them—all in the same place and updated regularly throughout the year as new opportunities become available.

Below you will find a list of the top international open calls, residencies, fellowships, and awards that we believe will benefit artists during the upcoming year! The complete list is broken down into six categories: grants, residencies & fellowships, calls-for-entry, and opportunity sites

We will be updating this list throughout the year, so make sure to bookmark the page, check back often, and let us know if there is an opportunity that should be listed! We will also be sending out reminders of upcoming deadlines on our Instagram page, so follow along at @artworkarchive to get the most up-to-date calls and never miss a deadline.

2023 Changing Climate Residency

The 2023 International Thematic Residency, Changing Climate, addresses the most critical issue of our time. For the Changing Climate Open Call, SFAI seeks to support artistic exploration, creative activism, and community art actions related to global warming that inspire individual transformation and inform collective action.

Do we believe we can curb carbon impacts or even reverse the current carbon trajectory and subsequent climate devastation?

The goal to stay under 1.5 degree increase is a global mandate that is dependent on collective social, corporate and political responsibilities and actions that will impact all life on our planet. This question also touches on all of SFAI’s prior thematic investigations: food security, migration and displacement, water rights and drought, equal justice, historical truth and contemporary reckoning, labor and the nature of work, revolutionary thinking and the need for radical, systemic change.

SFAI encourages proposals from artists, activists, culture bearers, and creative practitioners whose work aligns with the theme through the lens of radical connection. Review our Guiding Questions for more information.

"Take Root Among the Stars: Black Abstraction in the Midwest" is an exhibition that will illuminate new approaches and strategies for Black Abstractionists to respond to this historical time with the freedom to imagine beyond this earth and beyond the art historical canon.

The exhibition title is in reference to the Black Science Fiction Writer, Octavia Butler's two volume collection The Earthseed Books; a story that depicts a society in the aftermath of worldwide ecological and economic apocalypse. The protagonist in this new world is guided by what is called "The Book of the Living." In passage 44 of "The Book of the Living" there is a title to a passage that reads, "the words of welcoming". Mortem: Online Death School

Mortem Online Death School is a two-week program for artists to pursue their curiosity about death and to explore and develop their identity as a death-curious artist. The virtual residency will involve daily live video lectures with international death care and funeral industry workers, historians, biologists and artists presenting research about a range of death related topics, one tethered international field trip in a graveyard near you and many short one on one meetings with artists who make art about death around the world. Built in to the 2 – 3 hours of daily programming are discussions, recommended assignments and show and tell. The program is designed to give insight into death knowledge and ritual from a wide range of perspectives.

Ayatana death residencies facilitate talk about death and talk about talking about death. It is not grief therapy and won’t ask you to dwell on pain from your past, although it will be an opportunity to share past experiences in a death positive context and may be therapeutic. It will help you identify as an artist who works with themes of death and give you tools to talk about it and to get involved with non-art professionals who also work with death.
