Public Art Water Treatment Plant
Public Art & Proposals
- Submission Deadline: June 24, 2024
- Award Info: Up to four finalists will be selected by the Public Art Review Committee to create a concept proposal and will receive $1,500 as a concept stipend. Total project budget is $150,000.
- Eligibility: National
- Categories: Craft/Traditional Arts, Mixed-Media/Multi-Discipline, Sculpture
- Location: Northfield, Minnesota 55057, United States
Introduction
The City of Northfield seeks an artist or artist team to design and execute site-specific art installation/s, to be located on the grounds of the Water Treatment Plant. The artist(s)/artist team will work with the project team to integrate the artwork into the overall landscape design.
As described, the art is to be located outside the new water treatment facility, on the grounds adjacent to Hall Ave.
Northfield is a vibrant community that values and enjoys its history, arts and culture, and active recreational areas. Northfield residents are warm and welcoming, and love Northfield’s history and features. Some of these include:
Situated on the traditional homelands of the Wahpekute and other bands of the Dakota People
Historic roots as a river milling town founded in 1855
Active Arts and Culture
Situated on the scenic Cannon River
Home to two excellent colleges—St. Olaf College and Carleton College
Thirty-five city parks, as well as the Carleton Arboretum and the St. Olaf Natural Lands
Known for its annual Defeat of Jesse James Days celebration which commemorates the historic failed bank robbery by the James-Younger Gang
High civic engagement among residents who make a meaningful contribution to the community
Highly walkable and bikeable
Vibrant, growing public art collection. Please see website for further details of project background and images.
Goals
The goal of this project is to create a sense of place as well as a sense of pride in city facilities and public spaces with artwork incorporated into the landscape design at the city's new Water Treatment Plant. Artist(s)/artists teams will work with Barr engineering to integrate artwork with landscape design. Among these goals, the City seeks art that will:
Express the vibrant, creative, and charming character of Northfield
Capture interest and engage people of all ages and abilities
Provide an interactive artistic amenity to the grounds where the public can visit
Potential themes to explore
Water conservation, stormwater management
Ecology and geology
Climate change and resiliency
Artwork may be
Interactive
Kinetic
Reflective of ecological function and/or engages with the history of the land
Functional, such as sculptural seating, or artwork that integrates the stormwater roof scupper and adjacent plantings
Interpretive
Other approaches
The City and the Public Art Review Committee seek the best proposal for this area. The unique nature of, and multiple demands of this area may merit approaches to art that we have not anticipated. Thus, while we have done our best to describe the community's goals, we encourage artists not to be limited by our descriptions, and to think broadly about how art here can:
Communicate with people using this area for any purpose
Advance Northfield's goals as a community
Flexibility can include forms of art sources of materials, labor, and funding.
Proposals should feel free to propose other approaches to funding or procuring the described project.
"Best value" guidelines will give the Public Art Review Committee leeway in commending, and the City flexibility in choosing, the artist and artwork.
Artwork materials and requirements
The material, design and palette must stand up to local weather and be amenable to ongoing maintenance. The artist and City staff will also be working with a landscape architect, which will be provided within the general project construction budget, and not as a part of the artist stipend. A statement of recommended maintenance for a 5-year period will be required.
Criteria for selection
The Public Art Review Committee will review qualifications of applicant artists and make recommendations to the Northfield Arts and Culture Commission. The selection panel includes members of the Arts and Culture Commission, representation from the Northfield School District, representation from the city Public Works department, arts advocates and community members. Their selection will be based on the following criteria:
Artistic excellence as demonstrated in images of the artist’s previous work
Experience working on large-scale, site-specific projects
Willingness to meet all contractual guidelines
The use of content appropriate for all audiences
Willingness to be flexible in working with City staff on design changes as needed
In addition, materials and design must be weather-resistant. We encourage you to consider and address any safety or accessibility concerns.
For additional review criteria, refer to the Northfield Arts and Culture Commission "Art in Public Places"
Artwork purchase budget
Up to four finalists will be selected by the Public Art Review Committee to create a concept proposal and will receive $1,500 as a concept stipend.
Total project budget is $150,000. The budget will include all taxes, insurance and all other fees. The artist is required to install the artwork in a professional manner and is responsible for any installation fees. The artist is responsible for all the materials related to the execution of the project.

Pine Meadow Ranch Center for Arts and Agriculture Open Call: Care & Stewardship
Residency

- Award Info: Stipend to offset living and travel expenses for out-of-town residents
- Eligibility: International
- Categories: Craft/Traditional Arts, Photography, Drawing, Film/Video/New Media, Mixed-Media/Multi-Discipline, Painting, Sculpture
- Location: Sisters, OR 97759, United States
We are thrilled to announce our open call for participation in our 2025 artist residency program, dedicated to exploring the theme Care and Stewardship. At the heart of this theme is the idea that care transcends human boundaries and acknowledges our interconnected existence in the world. We invite individuals from diverse backgrounds and disciplines to explore the multifaceted dimensions and essence of care.
At its core, Care & Stewardship beckons reflection upon reciprocal responsibility we hold as stewards of the Earth. It prompts us to consider the consequences of our actions, both immediate and in the future, on ecosystems, biodiversity, and future generations. Yet, its reach extends far beyond interpersonal dynamics to encompass the stewardship of our environment, the pursuit of social justice, and the cultivation of collective well-being. Through this exploration, we invite artists, scientists, scholars, and cultural bearers to critically engage with the concept of care, probing its intersections with issues of social justice, environmental sustainability, and ethical responsibility. Together, let us delve into the transformative potential of care in shaping more compassionate and sustainable futures.
At Pine Meadow Ranch Center for Arts & Agriculture, we work with artists, educators, researchers and Tribal members to support the long-term resilience of the local ecosystem. As stewards of the land, we rely on a deep understanding of the local ecology and the application of time-tested techniques to conserve natural resources and maintain the fertile conditions in which life can flourish. Understanding how different entities within the ecosystem interact and coexist at PMRCAA has allowed us to preserve the ranching tradition and maintain agricultural land. Our hope is to restore PMRCAA’s soil by understanding the diverse web of relationships responsible for maintaining its fertility.
By embracing a more expansive perspective that recognizes the power of diverse ways of knowing and being, we concern ourselves with how to instill ethical relations of production and explore the role artists, culture bearers, scientists, scholars, and researchers play in nourishing radical imagination and facilitating transformative change.

Since 1974, the Centrum Artists-In-Residence program has welcomed hundreds of writers, artists and creative thinkers to immerse themselves in the historic charm and natural beauty of Fort Worden in Port Townsend, Washington. The campus has sweeping views of the Olympic and Cascade Mountain ranges, miles of wandering beach and forest trails, and a peppering of World War I–era batteries and bunkers.
Creative professionals from all disciplines and backgrounds can take advantage of charming cabins, studio spaces, and a rich array of resources. Residents can expect semi-rustic experiences in comfortable cabins or apartments. Visual artists have their choice of a few studios of different sizes, including use of the printmaking studio at Corvidae Press for experienced printmakers. Our campus includes several organizations with whom a resident can arrange to connect such as: Rainshadow recording studio, Madrona MindBody Institute, the Port Townsend School of Woodworking, Copper Canyon Press, and Northwind Art.
Above all, artists cite their residency as a unique opportunity to focus on their practice outside of many of the pressures of work, school, or expectation-based constraints.
We’ve updated our application process and will be accepting applications for three of our residency programs (Emerging Artist, In the Making, and Self-Directed Residencies) via the same application portal between April 15-June 30, 2024. In your application, simply select the residencies you’d like to be considered for.
Our residency program is aimed at providing artists, writers, and creatives in all disciplines permission to relax, to focus, and/or re-invent their practice as needed. We believe that residencies are a central part of any artistic practice and that magic happens when you take time to reflect and focus on what matters most. We also believe that community matters, and that being in residence alongside others expands networks, fosters collectivity and friendship, and helps our arts ecosystem thrive. We encourage all applicants to read all about what Centrum Residencies offer here.
In this application stage, we will ask for:
Work samples, along with a link directly to an existing online portfolio if you have one, so that our panel can understand your practice. Our panels look to curate a diversity of practices, work that is relevant to contemporary issues and work that expands thinking in its field. Residencies are open to practices that include but not limited to: visual arts, writing, curatorial, performance, dance, music, and social practices.
Demographics to ensure that we are selecting from a diverse pool of applicants.

Let us convince you otherwise
Abstract art, with its kaleidoscopic array of colors and shapes, challenges our perception of the world and transports us to the limitless potential of the creative mind. It moves about the canvas, playing with our eyes and ears and forcing us to reevaluate our assumptions. The entangled strokes of paint create an orchestra of feelings that reveals hidden meaning to the curious. Meaning is ambiguous and up for grabs in this kaleidoscopic collage of forms and lines. Each brushstroke conveys meaning and encourages the development of unique tales. Digital abstract art is a call to explore one's inner world; it is an artistic medium that reaches one's spirit and spurs original thought.
TERAVARNA presents the best platform for abstract art contests. We provide the ideal domain where you can present your artwork and get admired by visitors digitally. All art enthusiasts will get to view your creation, which respected professionals in digital abstract art will judge. Such panelists have been hand-picked for their knowledge and experience in the subject, and they will give insightful comments on your applications. Their feedback may be a springboard to enhance your creative abilities and personal style further. All the entries will compete, and the winners will be announced in this official portal.
We intend to provide the ultimate abstract artwork gallery meeting point where admirers can find new art to praise, and artists can find new admirers for inspiration. Here at TERAVARNA, we think it's important to acknowledge and honor hard work and excellence. - Location: New Jersey, United States
Northern NJ Community Foundation ArtsBergen’s is accepting applications for inclusion on its artist roster. Artists can apply between February 29 – June 30, 2024. This Call is open to local, regional, and national artists.
NNJCF’s ArtsBergen is one of the largest producers of public art in Bergen County, NJ, and is seeking to grow its roster of artists who create public art that is relevant to community and accessible to the public. We are seeking a diverse group of artists and artist teams who are interested and capable of producing innovative and creative artworks and experiences in the municipalities we serve.
This is an opportunity for artists to be included in a pool for potential paid work opportunities. ArtsBergen is looking to learn more about artists in the area available and interested in creating public art. We will compile this list of talent into a roster of artists we can call upon to help us develop and implement projects. The roster will also become the main tool for choosing artists for public art projects, as well as a resource to match municipal interest and artist disciplines, styles, and foci.
About the Northern New Jersey Community Foundation (NNJCF)
The Northern New Jersey Community Foundation (NNJCF) builds connections, pools resources, and provides leadership to enrich quality of life in the eight counties we serve: Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Morris, Passaic, Sussex, Union and Warren.
Much of our work involves placemaking. We help shape the shared places where people live, work and interact – from a small park or street corner to an entire city.
NNJCF works to build:
• More Creative and Inspiring Places
• Greener and Healthier Places
• More Places of Belonging and Opportunity
ArtsBergen, the arts initiative of the NNJCF, promotes creative placemaking, the practice of engaging communities in designing their public spaces using the arts. It also works to develop community-driven public art projects that reflect, honor, and instill the values and culture of a place.
We invite you to join us in expanding the public art landscape in northern New Jersey. We strive for more communities to have the opportunity to both co-create and experience art in the public realm that sparks dialogue, builds connection, and addresses important issues. We look forward to getting to know you and your work.
