The Artwork Archive team set out to find the best art opportunities, artist grants, and calls for entry for visual artists in the Southwestern United States.
Below you will find a list of the top artist residencies, international open calls, artist grants, exhibition opportunities and art competitions that we believe will benefit artists, specifically in the Southwest.

2026 New Mexico Arts Artist Residency - Sandia Mountain Natural History Center

Each residency will take place over a six-week period in which the artist resides and works in Cedar Crest, New Mexico. Artists will have access to and are encouraged to interact with the land, culture, visitor center and the surrounding area. The culmination of the residency centers the artist’s research and development of new work that showcases ideas and work created during their six-week stay at Sandia Mountain Natural History Center. Public engagement opportunities include, but are not limited to: an artist talk or exhibition, workshop, temporary site-specific installations, performances, etc. Artwork and community engagement should be safe and appropriate for both children and adults, ADA compliant, and should not permanently alter the environment when removed.

2025 Call for 2-D Existing Art

The committee is interested in purchasing existing works made by New Mexico artists that show compelling craftsmanship and technique in a range of media including: painting, printmaking, drawing, collage, weaving, mixed media photography and assemblage. Digital photography and original works must be printed on archival paper using archival inks; Giclée reproductions of original works will not be accepted. Exhibition sites for this collection of 2-D artwork will include, but not be limited to, Albuquerque City Hall, the east and/or west complexes of the Convention Center, city libraries, community centers and other city-owned facilities deemed appropriate by the Albuquerque Arts Board.

Baytown Sculpture Trail 2026

The Baytown Sculpture Trail is pleased to announce the call for entry for the 2026 exhibition. The exhibition will be installed in early April 2026 and will be on display until March 2027.
Each artist’s accepted artwork will receive a $1500 honorarium. Additionally they will have a Best of Show Award and a People’s Choice Award of $1,500 each. They will reserve a room for two nights for their accepted artists so they might attend their artist dinner followed by the opening reception event. They’ve had a pretty good track record in selling and leasing the artworks in their first three years. They have sold 25 pieces and leased 12. So far this ongoing fourth year they have sold 2 and leased 5 and still have 7 months to go! Entries for the juried art call can be submitted at https://sculpturetrailbaytown2026.artcall.org/. The 41st Annual International Exhibition is a juried visual art competition organized by the Department of Art and Art History at The University of Texas at Tyler. Internationally known artists, curators, and scholars have served as jurors selecting works for exhibition created by some of the best contemporary artists working today. The Department purchases three to six works from the exhibition each year; purchased works are added to our permanent collection. The permanent collection serves as an educational teaching resource; much of the permanent collection is exhibited throughout the UT Tyler main campus.
