More than ‘the powerful stand alone’, we’re interested in what a group of images can reveal when they find each other in a certain way. This is why we like starting from the broadest group of images in order to arrive to another layer of meaning of the whole by carefully listening to them.
ATTENTION: Step 1 and Step 2 are important for archiving the contacts of each author. The specifications are mandatory under penalty of exclusion.
Although we are photography based, our new call is open worldwide to all types of visual artists (photographers, painters, illustrators, sculptors etc.) with no restrictions in terms of age, approach… You can send images from a specific project but note that they will still be considered individually.

- Entry Fee: $25.00
- Eligibility: International
- Categories: Craft/Traditional Arts, Photography, Drawing, Film/Video/New Media, Mixed-Media/Multi-Discipline, Painting, Sculpture
- Location: Little Switzerland, North Carolina
In 1999, Wildacres Retreat opened our residency program for artists. Since that time, we have had the opportunity to host hundreds of writers, artisans, and musicians. Participants in the program stay in one of three self-catering cabins located just a quarter-mile beyond the retreat entrance. One of the cabins is completely ADA compliant and another can house two residents working on a project together.
Using the space provided by the three cabins, Wildacres hosts approximately seventy artists each year for one-week residencies from April through October. Residencies begin on Monday afternoons and run until Sunday mornings. While there are landlines at each residency cabin, there is no internet access in the cabins, and cellphones do not typically connect except in the main part of the retreat where we do have WiFi access. The residency program allows artists the solitude and inspiration needed to begin or continue work on a project in their particular field of creative arts. Past residents tell us that being able to work in such a secluded, natural setting provides them with an unparalleled opportunity to step away from outside distractions and completely focus on their work.
Duration of residency: one-week residencies from April through October
Wildacres residencies are offered at no costs to participants

We are particularly interested in people who wish to work with found objects and repurpose them, as our junk yard is full of materials, but we are open to all forms of creations: visual, performative, audible, theoretical, scholarly, written, etc.

This juried exhibition will feature artworks centered upon the concept of selfhood. It will consider how selfhood is constructed, altered, and reimagined. Contemporary artists investigate the multiplicitous nature of selfhood: gender, sexual orientation, race, class, age, ethnicity, and so forth. Artworks may consider selfhood outside the traditional Western views of self. Selfhood, as a dichotomy, can reflect cultural norms and be a source of resistance to them. Navigating selfhood during disruptive times can lead to crossroads of crisis; thereby, artists may present visualizations of selfhood that explore the process of self-discovery, self-definition, and self-direction.
What are aspects of resilient selfhood? How can others define our selfhood? These questions are explored in the arts. The protagonist, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, from the film On the Basis of Sex exemplifies the resiliency of selfhood.

Why do we create art? For what purpose? What drives us?
This question has perplexed humanity for decades, yet a definitive answer eludes us.
Are we motivated by the idea of fame and wealth, or is there a deeper calling?
From the dawn of civilization, individuals have sought to leave their imprint multitude ways, on cave walls, papyrus, etc. In ancient times, a cave painting wasn't shared widely like today's viral content, it was often witnessed by just a few. Thus, the intrinsic urge to craft art surely goes beyond mere pursuit of riches and acclaim.
Beyond the raw need to express and offer a window into our inner world, we yearn for others to discern the silent truths of our existence. Like the generations that preceded us, we aspire to leave behind a legacy and simultaneously, we can't help but contemplate: will the world recognize our sacrifices, the depth of our love, and the passion that fueled our creations, or will they be lost in the eternity of time?
This exhibition aims to spotlight the essence behind each artistic creation, underscoring that every piece tells a unique tale awaiting discovery.
Excitingly, the globally celebrated art critic, Tabish Khan, will grace our opening event on the 10th of November, delivering an insightful speech on the exhibition's theme.
Tabish Khan, a fervent advocate for making art universally accessible, is a renowned art critic entrenched in London's vibrant art scene. As the visual arts editor for Londonist and a regular contributor to Culture Whisper, he's a trusted voice, offering weekly top exhibition insights for FAD through his discerning column "What's Wrong with Art". Tabish's commitment extends beyond critique, he's a trustee for ArtCan, City & Guilds London Art School, and Discerning Eye — organizations dedicated to uplifting artists and curating seminal exhibitions.

Artists on the Lam is thrilled to announce the launch of our inaugural zine, Laminator! All artists, poets, and writers from anywhere in the world are welcome to submit work for publication!
In an ever increasingly digital world, we often find ourselves seeking ways to unplug, searching for the tangible, the analog, something tactile and physical we can touch and hold with our own hands, something to keep and cherish as a memento, as ephemera, something to lose, something to find, something to give and share with a loved one like a secret.
And, much like the soothing sounds of a pencil scratching on paper, there’s just something about the feel of flipping through the pages of a good book.
What we’re looking for:
Visual art (all mediums and forms are welcome! examples:)
- Drawing
- Painting
- Photography
- Printmaking
- Collage
- Etc.!
Poetry
Prose
- All forms are welcome, including non-fiction such as personal essays, anecdotes, letters, etc.!
There’s no theme; submit your best work! (But if that’s too broad for you and you’d like some guidance, here’s a theme Artists on the Lam has always been obsessed with: Dreams. Interpret that however you wish.)
There’s no application fee! It’s free to submit to the zine!
Ready to apply? Complete the steps at http://www.artistsonthelam.com/zine-open-call (includes an optional additional opportunity for artists in the form of an online art show)
