Pop Art

While the Pop Art movement started in the 1950s in Great Britain and sought to explore popular culture and make art more affordable, today, Pop Art has a different approach. While the affordability is still there, the themes from American pop culture (westerns, fiction, and so on) jumped into more vast choices. Pop Art now is questioning the movement's founding fathers, including the interpretations of their works. This art movement is starting to approach itself much more than reflect consumerism, commercials, and massive production.

Pop Art has many faces, many different ideas behind it. However, one visual aspect is joining all these differences - art pieces are popping out with their bold color palette, the zoomed-in approach of various images, and commercial-like perspective.

IT'S MAGIC. A BEYOND EXPERIENCE

Magic is all that is capable of transforming the aspects and dimensions of the real world in fantastic ways, within a suggestive and ecstatic atmosphere. Art, art’s practice, and its product are the first testimony of form and expression of this realization.

Since the Paleolithic age, symbols acquire magical and propitiatory purposes, thus establishing contact with divinities: primitive men entered deep caves, leaving traces of themselves through a creative act, getting lost in another dimension and then returning to the real world. Perhaps a reference to the cycle of life, death, union, rebirth.

It is an innate human instinct to re-create and live out fantastic dimensions, where everything is connected with everything and where everything is possible.

Monumental- Curated by Sergio Gomez

Have you ever made a small work of art and wished you could recreate it on a much larger scale? MONUMENTAL online exhibition will do just that. The exhibition explores our perception of size and scale when viewing a work of art by manipulating the environment in which it is presented for viewing. Does our appreciation and understanding of a work of art change based on how big or small do we perceive it to be? Does scale affect how “important” we presume the art to be? These are some of the questions this exhibition aims to explore.

A selection of submitted works will be chosen and proportionally enlarged to fit a museum-like online exhibition space through virtual reality. We are looking for extraordinary 2D small works, no larger than 16 inches, that have the visual impact and characteristics to exist on a larger scale. The selected images will be digitally resized to a scale the curator deems appropriate for the online experience.

In Search of the Dragon

Oriental is a unique little village located on the Inner Coastal Waterway in NC. One of the last remaining fishing villages in the US, it is also known as The Sailing Capital of North Carolina. Oriental is also home for many creatives including artists and artisans, musicians, authors, and thespians. Each year on New Year’s Eve, two “dragons” (mysteriously sporting human legs and feet from below) parade through the town. The villagers and as many as a thousand visitors dance around and behind the creatures, banging pots and spoons to ward away evil spirits in the coming year. Others try and touch the dragon for good luck.

Later, in February, coordinating with Chinese New Year, the Pamlico County Arts Council host their annual membership drive, known as The Burning of the Dragon. A literal torching of a 30 ft high rendition of the creature, set aflame to ensure nothing but creative and positive things happen in the coming year. Both of these events have become regional Coastal Carolina treasured events!

Clearly, Oriental loves dragons! And we want to see yours! All artists in all mediums are invited to apply.

In 1999, Wildacres Retreat opened our residency program for artists.  Since that time, we have had the opportunity to host hundreds of writers, artisans, and musicians. One of the cabins is completely ADA compliant and another can house two residents working on a project together.

Using the space provided by the three cabins, Wildacres hosts approximately 70 artists each year for one-week residencies from April through October. Residencies begin on Monday afternoons and run until Sunday mornings. The residency program allows artists the solitude and inspiration needed to begin or continue work on a project in their particular field of creative arts.  Past residents tell us that being able to work in such a secluded, natural setting provides them with an unparalleled opportunity to step away from outside distractions and completely focus on their work.

Retreat to the Moroccan Sahara

Cafe Tissardmine offers up to 9 artists a 21-day residency with no specific outcome required. whilst normally there are opportunities to work with the children in the village and engage in village life, we will probably still be in the position of needing to socially distance and wear masks. and avoid all physical contact so some engagement may not be possible. COVID 19 never reached us in our village and I hope it stays that way.

There are many demands put on artists and so our intention at Cafe Tissardmine is to provide a space for the artist to get re-inspired and to just breathe. The most important information we need is the reason you feel the desert is the right place for you to be. We need to get an understanding from you that you understand how isolated we are. We have access to the internet but not on a regular basis and it requires some effort to get it. It is beautiful here and silent. It does not have everything “on tap” so you need to be inventive and resourceful (with some help from us).
