Just north of the beautiful little town of Blue Hill Maine, along the coast, is Curtis Cove. Blue Hill is a destination for a lot of artists with its pretty coastline older homes, and Maine charm, and on a scouting trip last year I stumbled upon this cove one cloudy afternoon. I took the opportunity to take a bunch of photos and filed them away. I seldom paint coastal scenes as I an overwhelmed with all there is to paint in my home state of Vermont. Even Lake Champlain is a rarity in my work. So when one of my galleries had a call for coastal works of art I knew exactly what to paint.
This painting captures a lot. There is the pebbled beach flanked by marsh grasses, the rocky shoreline, the low tide revealing kelp along the waterline, and of course the ocean with requisite off-shore island. I found it to be a lot of fun to paint and used several techniques that I don't typically get to exercise in this painting. The pebbled beach, in particular, required som experimentation and new skills. Luckily I have a good friend in Blue Hill so future coastal paintings are not out of the question.
