"INTERSTICES" plays with the in-between, encompassing the dual meanings of the word as both an intervening space AND an interval of time. The middle ground holds the SPACE between the literal sky and the reflected sky. The fence divides the space between here and there.
The interval of TIME between when I started this painting (before I knew what COVID-19 was) and when I finished it (3 months into this new way of life) is reflected in the struggle between light and dark. I can feel the grounding force from the focus (almost a meditation) it took to paint each individual line of shadow and highlight in the corrugated metal fence. The reflections of the cones in a smooth puddle of blue sky and bright clouds hint at the storm that has passed - ultimately, a sign of hope.
