As with many of my paintings, this is a real place as seen and painted through my imagination. For me, in-between spaces are symbolic of the ambiguity that we face in life. At first glance this simple urban setting divided by a fence may give the sense of a boundary, but I also see opportunity.
The composition plays with sight-lines, offering a simple foreground on this side of the fence, the expanse of clouds above, and the tiny details dissecting the middle ground. The continuation of both the fence and the powerlines off each side of the canvas implies the full story is not contained within this one captured window of time.
The title gives a clue to look longer and more closely at a given situation, lingering to discover the mystery of a touch of orange-red amidst all this blue in the tiny building peaking over the edge of the fence. A hint of what lies behind or beyond, open to the viewer’s imaginative interpretation.
