Paige Simianer | November 15, 2021

Each month Artwork Archive continues to gather the best artist opportunities for you.

As 2021 comes to an end — we have you covered. We know that this is the time of the year where you're probably the busiest, so we did all the dirty work for you and found some of the best opportunities out there for artists! Finish the year off right by applying to something that could brighten the new year!

Take a look through this list (most recent deadlines first). Your next opportunity is waiting!

51st Annual International Paperworks

The Paperworks juried exhibition at Minot State University has been through numerous changes. The first call for entries in 1969 started the National Print and Drawing Show. The 1980s brought National Works on Paper Exhibition to artists across the USA. A look forward to the new millennium in the 1990s re-titled the exhibitions to Americas 2000. Now, in an effort to better represent our multi-country appeal and entrants, we introduce INT'L Paperworks 2022. In this 51st year, it is our honor to invite you to share your works and your passion for art from across the world.

When part of a body of work, the photograph takes on new meaning, becoming part of a bigger and more complete narrative. A portfolio allows the photographer to explore the complexities of their subject, and provide context that gives it richness and meaning that is more than the sum of its parts.

The Uncanny

When the familiar becomes unfamiliar, we call it uncanny. That is to say, when something almost satisfies our brain’s search for human likeness but falls short by a small margin, we experience a characteristic sense of unease at the sight of it. This is our understanding of what it is about realistic androids and almost-perfect-but-not-quite CGI that makes our skin crawl, and it stems from Freudian theory surrounding the German word “unheimlich.” Freud tells us that the unheimlich, or unhomely, is our experience when confronted with something that is like home to us, but is made wrong somehow. How do you incorporate the unheimlich, or uncanny, into your artwork? Does your work illicit a visceral reaction from the viewer, or traverse the boundary between perfect and imperfect human likeness? We want to see your most uncomfortably human and impalpably imperfect images.

ON CLOTHING: THE VISIBLE SELF

The cultural codes within which we define ourselves through our image, generate the language used for the realization of inter-individual exchanges that may be defined as "relations in public" (Goffman E.). Every human being develops an attitude towards self-representation, this self-representation concerns itself with different fields and languages, such as the way one dresses. Extension of the self, expression of our "modus vivendi", the dress is a cultural product that concerns our identity, linked to historical, cultural and personal continuity, through which it is possible to affirm one's individuality, and communicate and inform others on ourselves. This call is an invitation for photographers who tackle such a subject in its various fields of interest: from sociology to fashion; from the anthropology of costumes to that of psychological introspection.

TRUE BLUE Prospectus

The color blue is the most universally appealing color on the spectrum. It can represent trust, loyalty, wisdom, confidence, and sensitivity. But it can also convey fragility, depression, impersonality, and even coldness. There was a time when the pigment blue was the rarest and most precious shade of all. Some artists even went into debt just to use the color! With so many intriguing shades of blue to work and so many meanings and representations, show us TRUE BLUE through your perspective.

From the naturally lit studio, the residence and the balconies, you can enjoy the magnificent panorama of the sea and surrounding farmland. The area has a very pleasant and moderate subtropical climate all year round, with average temperatures ranging between 12-28ºC. Boomer Magazine Open Call: Identity

How do we build identity in art and most importantly how do we make ourselves accepted? Being an artist was never easy and most of the time especially in the emerging period things are really hard and complicated. One of the most complicated aspects is being accepted exactly as we are and for the things, we stand for, for example, our Art and our true self. The whole idea of identity and acceptance might not sound like a big deal but is the fundamental base for everything that humankind stands for, especially in art.

More than sixty-seven years have passed since her death but Frida still continues to empower generations of artists to accept themselves and share their identities and their art with the world.
