Ribbon-wrapped rebar, wood, knotted ribbon, steel sheet

“Sprout” is an abstracted rebar flora wrapped in ribbon that precariously balances on stacks of smooth wooden pieces resembling stones. The color scheme is whimsical, with vibrant pinks, blues and purples. The wrapped ribbon neatly mimics the form of the rebar, and there is a knotted extension of the ribbon to expose its decorative materiality. A heat-torched steel sheet detail is nudged into the wood for continuity with this sculpture's companion pieces. The mixture of the industrial infrastructure of rebar and natural wood demonstrates a utopic display of coexistence between nature and human interaction. “Sprout” is one of four pieces in an installation collection called “Industrial Garden, 2023.” This garden is a constructed landscape of bent rebar, sanded wood, hung fibers and heat-torched steel sheets to propose an idealized utopia: a whimsical and welcoming space for emotional and physical regeneration. The work delivers an alternative setting that encourages the exploration of new possibilities and the desire for adventure and self-discovery. This suite of sculptures originated from my direct observations and my imagination of the outdoor settings that provided me with therapeutic and grounding outlets. I abstract my subjects to create curiosity about what they resemble.
