Percent for Art
The City of Eugene established its commitment to the Visual Arts through the Percent for Art Ordinance of 1981, which states that it is an appropriate function of government to foster arts and the development of artists. Visual arts contribute to and provide experiences which enrich and enhance our social and physical environment. The percent for art process is triggered when any building, park, mall, or other capital construction project (but not including streets, alleys, bicycle paths, and other public thoroughfares) constructed, remodeled, or purchased by the city which construction, remodeling or purchasing involves the expenditure of more than $50,000. Since its initial inception in 2017, the program has dramatically expanded in scope and now includes an artist roster of 100+ Lane County artists, ranging from those wishing to complete their first mural to seasoned muralists with several works around the community, as well as nationally and even internationally. Visit eugene-or.gov/UrbanCanvas for more information.
Fresh Paint Initiative

20x21 Mural Project
The 20x21 Mural Project is an initiative of the City of Eugene Cultural Services' Public Art Program. In 2017 it set a goal to create 20 or more world-class murals in Eugene before the 2022 IAAF World Athletics Championships, and in 2019 it surpassed its mark with 22. The project is led by an engaged committee that has collaborated across the communications, law, architecture, small business, nonprofit and arts sectors.
Community Murals
This initiative is an opportunity for community members and commissioned artists to work together to envision and express the history of our region, our community values and/or what we’d like our future to look like.
