In January 2025 I began the second set of digital pictures based on my journalling sketches during the pandemic. This was the most ambitious single print in the Plant Series 2: 'Masked Cavendish' (so far...). The scale (50" on the longest side) is larger than anything I had done before and it took some time to get the balance between the elements right. In this work I am exploring the tensions between two things: a struggle we all sometimes feel to be noticed or to escape sight and the interplay between highly digital elements and hand-drawn elements. The first theme plays out in the fact that the little pencil sketches are reduplicated everywhere but never clearly seen - they fight through the layered textures and digital blend modes. The second is a more technical point - the four flowing panels were created by the fractal generator I sometimes use and create a pleasing textural and thematic contrast with the still visible paper and pencil. Perhaps it was telling me that what the other person can see is as important as your own hiding and revealing.
