Semi-abstract piece with photomontage of plastic tape and hand-drawn sketch. This work draws on my pandemic journal sketch series made of one plant's growth. I drew it each day and found great solace in the urgent, thriving growth of the little plant when we were all so hidden and full of fear. I enjoyed playing with the different elements very much as I created this work from drawing no. 12 (made January 2021) four years on. I've always felt troubled by the division we have created between the natural world and the manmade world - each being lessened by it. Digital art bridges these spaces for me and in this image the two came together. We can barely see a hand-drawn plant sketch being held down by monstrous amounts of tape. At the same time, the balance of layers and squares is visually rich and my favourite lilac background holds things together. I was happy, eventually, with the slightly puzzling effect. The blend mode suddenly created a slice of sky and sun shining through clouds. Nature always comes back resilient and powerful, no matter what we try to do to her.
