Centrum Artists-In-Residence programs
Residency
- Submission Deadline: June 30, 2024
- Entry Fee: Please see website for residency fees that may apply if accepted.
- Eligibility: International
- Categories: Craft/Traditional Arts, Photography, Drawing, Film/Video/New Media, Mixed-Media/Multi-Discipline, Painting, Sculpture
- Location: Port Townsend, WA 98368, United States
Since 1974, the Centrum Artists-In-Residence program has welcomed hundreds of writers, artists and creative thinkers to immerse themselves in the historic charm and natural beauty of Fort Worden in Port Townsend, Washington. The campus has sweeping views of the Olympic and Cascade Mountain ranges, miles of wandering beach and forest trails, and a peppering of World War I–era batteries and bunkers.
Creative professionals from all disciplines and backgrounds can take advantage of charming cabins, studio spaces, and a rich array of resources. Residents can expect semi-rustic experiences in comfortable cabins or apartments. Visual artists have their choice of a few studios of different sizes, including use of the printmaking studio at Corvidae Press for experienced printmakers. Our campus includes several organizations with whom a resident can arrange to connect such as: Rainshadow recording studio, Madrona MindBody Institute, the Port Townsend School of Woodworking, Copper Canyon Press, and Northwind Art.
Above all, artists cite their residency as a unique opportunity to focus on their practice outside of many of the pressures of work, school, or expectation-based constraints.
We’ve updated our application process and will be accepting applications for three of our residency programs (Emerging Artist, In the Making, and Self-Directed Residencies) via the same application portal between April 15-June 30, 2024. In your application, simply select the residencies you’d like to be considered for.
Our residency program is aimed at providing artists, writers, and creatives in all disciplines permission to relax, to focus, and/or re-invent their practice as needed. We believe that residencies are a central part of any artistic practice and that magic happens when you take time to reflect and focus on what matters most. We also believe that community matters, and that being in residence alongside others expands networks, fosters collectivity and friendship, and helps our arts ecosystem thrive. We encourage all applicants to read all about what Centrum Residencies offer here.
In this application stage, we will ask for:
Work samples, along with a link directly to an existing online portfolio if you have one, so that our panel can understand your practice. Our panels look to curate a diversity of practices, work that is relevant to contemporary issues and work that expands thinking in its field. Residencies are open to practices that include but not limited to: visual arts, writing, curatorial, performance, dance, music, and social practices.
Demographics to ensure that we are selecting from a diverse pool of applicants.
The type of workspace/accommodations needed for your work
One short paragraph about what a residency would mean to you.
Indicate which residency programs you want to be considered for.
Please see details for each residency on website.

Northern NJ Community Foundation ArtsBergen’s is accepting applications for inclusion on its artist roster. Artists can apply between February 29 – June 30, 2024. This Call is open to local, regional, and national artists.
NNJCF’s ArtsBergen is one of the largest producers of public art in Bergen County, NJ, and is seeking to grow its roster of artists who create public art that is relevant to community and accessible to the public. We are seeking a diverse group of artists and artist teams who are interested and capable of producing innovative and creative artworks and experiences in the municipalities we serve.
This is an opportunity for artists to be included in a pool for potential paid work opportunities. ArtsBergen is looking to learn more about artists in the area available and interested in creating public art. We will compile this list of talent into a roster of artists we can call upon to help us develop and implement projects. The roster will also become the main tool for choosing artists for public art projects, as well as a resource to match municipal interest and artist disciplines, styles, and foci.
About the Northern New Jersey Community Foundation (NNJCF)
The Northern New Jersey Community Foundation (NNJCF) builds connections, pools resources, and provides leadership to enrich quality of life in the eight counties we serve: Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Morris, Passaic, Sussex, Union and Warren.
Much of our work involves placemaking. We help shape the shared places where people live, work and interact – from a small park or street corner to an entire city.
NNJCF works to build:
• More Creative and Inspiring Places
• Greener and Healthier Places
• More Places of Belonging and Opportunity
ArtsBergen, the arts initiative of the NNJCF, promotes creative placemaking, the practice of engaging communities in designing their public spaces using the arts. It also works to develop community-driven public art projects that reflect, honor, and instill the values and culture of a place.
We invite you to join us in expanding the public art landscape in northern New Jersey. We strive for more communities to have the opportunity to both co-create and experience art in the public realm that sparks dialogue, builds connection, and addresses important issues. We look forward to getting to know you and your work.

The Adobe Creative Residency at the V&A is a new, fresh approach to bring making into the museum. This programme will enable the museum to employ three full-time residents, five days a week for 12 months. Each resident will work with a designated audience to bring creativity, design and making to diverse audiences. Embedded within the V&A learning team, residents will commit half their time to developing engaging programming across the V&A sites around their craft, this will include V&A South Kensington, Young V&A, and V&A East. New residents will play a key role in the expansion of the V&A's public programming efforts. Residents will also work with local communities across the UK to create a new model of programming outside the museum to build and sustain links with underserved communities. Additionally, each resident will receive studio space, mentorship, resources, access to the museum's resources and staff expertise. Their work will be featured in a six-month display at the close of their residency.
All our residents are audience-focused. We aim for you to draw from our collections to inspire careers in the creative industries as well as future design and artistic practice. You will be expected to work actively with visitors through educational activities, as well as develop your personal practice. Each open call will identify a core audience that we’re keen for you to work with: schools, families or young people. You can see the extent of the V&A's Learning Programmes on our website. Residents will be expected to commit half their time to developing engaging programming around their craft across the V&A sites with the V&A learning team.
Residents are also required to open their studio to the public or show their work in progress to visitors in the galleries through open studio events. If you don't enjoy working with the public and are not comfortable sharing your work in progress, then this residency programme is probably not for you. However, many of our alumni comment about the value of this experience, encouraging them to become more confident and articulate in describing their work and sharing ideas with a variety of audiences.

Welcome to the 2024 Summer Workshops
This year, we have lined up 65 extraordinary workshops in visual arts and creative writing over the course of nine weeks. We’ve brought together an outstanding group of instructors that includes many esteemed faculty members, along with many faces who are new to FAWC. We are confident that this dynamic combination of new and familiar faces will help create an inspiring atmosphere at FAWC that will invite students to take creative leaps.
Register for a Workshop
Here are some of this summer’s highlights that we are most excited about:
A new tiered tuition system. In a continuation of our effort to make the Summer Workshops more welcoming and accessible to artists and writers who have been historically underserved by FAWC, we are introducing a tiered tuition system that will make workshops more affordable for those who need it. There is also a special discounted rate for teachers and students. Click here to learn more about it.
Online Catalog Only. This year, we will only offer an online catalog, supplemented by timely promotional announcements. We believe this is a more environmentally sustainable approach aligned with our values and furthers our commitment to mindfully steward our natural resources.
New and familiar faces. Many of you will notice that a few beloved, long-time instructors aren’t teaching this year. Don’t worry—they’ll be back! Our faculty recruitment strategy stresses having a fresh mix of faculty every year. Periodically, we will give all instructors a break for a year or two. This will allow us to invite new faculty consistently every year and keep our catalog vibrant and interesting for our students.
Queer Week is back! Andrea Lawlor is our returning curator for Queer Week II, and they have recruited an amazing group of instructors, including printmaker Miriam Klein Stahl, painter Ilana Savdie, writer and performer Celeste Lescene (along with his colleagues at Future Perfect Project), poet Cameron Awkward-Rich, writer Melissa Febos, and writer Carmen Maria Machado.
Commitment to DEIA. Check out the DEIA Resources link to learn more about everything we are doing to center our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. You’ll also find a variety of articles, videos, and websites where you can learn more about DEIA issues.
Scholarships. We are continuing our commitment to making the Summer Workshops more welcoming and inclusive by offering robust scholarship opportunities. Last year, 20% of our students attended a workshop without having to pay tuition, thanks to the generosity of our community. We aim to match or exceed that this summer. Click here to learn more about our scholarship program and apply for a scholarship. Please click here if you would like to make a tax-deductible donation to our Access Fund to support our scholarship program.
Our Partners. We are grateful to our many partners that help make the Summer Workshops so transformative for everyone who attends: the generous foundations and individuals that support the program; the academic institutions, nonprofits, and businesses who partner with us to provide scholarships; the hotels, inns, and B&Bs who make housing affordable for students; and the local businesses that donate goods and services.

The mission of the Creative Residency program at Bloedel Reserve is to foster creative thinking that is inspired by nature and that explores the connection between humans and the environment.
Selected artists and innovative thinkers are provided a three-week stay on the Bloedel grounds, with unlimited access to the Reserve’s 150 acres of sculpted gardens, forests, meadows, and wildlife habitats.
Established in 2015, the program has welcomed Creative Residents from a wide variety of disciplines, giving them the time to nurture their passions and deepen the connection between creativity, nature, and humanity.

Our mission is two-fold: to offer artists the kind of professional support you deserve and to provide the public with interesting, accessible, inclusive, and professional art experiences, including performances, readings, exhibits, and workshops.
OUR COMMUNITY
Surel’s Place believes that artists should be supported at a level commensurate to the value you add to our individual and collective lives. We aim to give you the time, shelter, and professional support your work deserves. In exchange, we ask you to offer art experiences to our community. Garden City values artists and their work, and as a resident, you will be valued and appreciated for the energy, ideas, and dedication that you bring to our city.
OUR PROGRAM
The program is open to professional visual, literary, and performance artists: painters, writers, musicians, architects, filmmakers, and choreographers… any artist who needs a place to focus. However, because of the property’s limitations and proximity to neighbors, this is not a place that can accommodate loud or terribly messy processes, such as welding or blacksmithing.
We favor artists whose work is technically advanced, unique, attractive (need not be pretty!), and conceptually valuable. Work that is predominantly conceptual, that must be explained in order to attract a viewer, may not be met with as much enthusiasm by our jurists. In addition, because we ask our residents to interact with the public through one workshop and one final event, we welcome artists who desire to connect with an audience in these ways.
Additionally, each cycle, one of our five residencies includes outreach to local schools through our PARTNER Schools Program — another way we do our part to serve our community.
Surel’s Place offers month-long residencies in our one-bedroom home with a spacious studio for artists aged 25 and older to focus on their work and their creative processes. free rent free utilities free wi-fi modest living stipend of $100 per week $300 travel stipend use of well-maintained bicycles for transportation free or discounted tickets to art events and movies free marketing via our website, Facebook, targeted emails, online public calendars, and press releases free professional event hosting including catering, curating, and logistics.
