The Studios of Key West, the premiere arts organization at the Southernmost Point of the United States, is now accepting residency applications from artists and writers from around the world. One month residencies are awarded to visual artists, writers, composers, performers, and interdisciplinary artists. The Studios’ residency program is community-based and built upon the hope that visiting artists will take inspiration from Key West’s rich artistic past and present, and will engage with — and be inspired by — the remarkable people and culture that surrounds them.
Applications are accepted online. Applications are evaluated by selection committees comprised of working artists and professionals in the applicants’ respective fields of discipline under the five categories: Visual Arts, Literary Arts, Media Arts, Musical Arts, and Performing Arts.
Please note we do not have certain specialized facilities within our campus (photography dark rooms, pottery studios, wood shops) but there are opportunities for community connections if awarded a residency. All live/work spaces include a private bedroom and bathroom; some workspaces are detached from the artist’s living space, some are combined. We will work with you to set up your work space with tables, easels, writing tables, stools, chairs, pin-up boards or whatever else (within reason!) you need to work.
How our residency program is responding to COVID 19:We have extended our residency deadline to June 8 to give artists a little more time to complete their applications for residencies falling between October 2020 and August 2021.While we will be postponing some of this year’s residencies until next season, we will also be selecting and placing new artists from our batch of current applications. Because we expect a drop in applications this year, we anticipate that the process will be no more competitive than in prior years (and perhaps even less competitive) regarding the ratio of spots available vs. overall applicants. If, for some reason, an artist is awarded a residency this year but conditions prohibit them from joining us next season, their residency will rollover and will be rescheduled at a time when travel/residencies are possible.
