This woodland view is in Jeffersonville at a good friends home. I went there, initially, for the great view of Mount Mansfield but I was drawn away from the great views of Mansfield by the beautiful light in the woods hitting the yellowing ferns. Initially I used this spot for inspiration for a smaller painting, Autumn Woods, which became a study for this larger piece. I replaced some of the Grey Birch trees that were there with White Birch, so you see a mix of both in this painting. At the time I had not identified the Grey Birch but after showing this to the property owner they identified the birch in the original smaller piece as Grey Birch.
It's the light that makes this piece sing to me. Filtered light late in the day and late in the year is a favorite of mine.
