In 2014 when I turned 60 on January 1st, I had the bright idea that I would do a journal quilt once a week. I made it through 10 weeks and then dropped the project. Now that I am in the last year of my 60’s, I am determined to complete the project or at least add to it. I named the series “In the Moment in My Sixties”. Each quilt represents what was on my mind the day I made it.
“In the Moment in My Sixties #2” captures my reflections on motherhood. I started it on India’s birthday January 5th. Her birthday is written in my hand writing - January 5, 1992 — the day my life changed.
The focus of the quilt is an African mother with her child. Appliquéd words add to the theme. Interestingly, I feel I am “Super Mom” and that India has become my BFF.
The quilt is embellished with charms, buttons and words. I signed and dated it on the front.
The back of the quilt is a paper money print. After all motherhood is expensive! There is a hanging sleeve on the back for easy display and a label that documents the quilt.
