In 2014 when I turned 60 on January 1st, I had the bright idea that I would do a journal quilt once a week. I made it through 10 weeks and then dropped the project. Now that I am in the last year of my 60’s, I am determined to complete the project or at least add to it. I named the series “In the Moment in My Sixties”. Each quilt represents what was on my mind the day I made it.
“In the Moment in My Sixties #6” celebrates Black History Month. A printed note about Harriet Tubman dominates the front of the quilt. I wrote in my hand writing “What a Woman!”. Reflecting on how far freed slaves had come since the days of Harriet Tubman, I added the word “integration” to the front of the quilt because integration greatly impacted my life.
The quilt is embellished with charms, cowrie shells and words. I signed and dated it on the front.
The back of the quilt is a teal and purple batik. There is a hanging sleeve on the back for easy display and a label that documents the quilt.
I signed it on the front. Visit my “In the Moment in My Sixties” gallery on my web site to see all of my journal quilts.
