In the semi-abstract piece made from pandemic sketch 9 I created a negative space image from the original drawing in a flat vector format then added texture and drama from crumpled paper impossibly threaded between different parts of the composition. I wanted the offset imagery to give the eye a playful and rich set of colours, shapes, and movement. I loved the golden yellow with the plum tones sitting harmoniously and pulling it together. I had been to the Matisse cutout exhibition in the months before and it changed my approach to the vector work quite significantly, I think. I found the way that he was moving towards simplicity and brevity in face of illness very touching. I hoped, but greatly doubted, that I could capture something like that one day.
