The Ucross Fellowship for Native American Artists supports the work of contemporary Native American visual artists, writers, and performers. Selected fellows receive a four-week residency that provides uninterrupted time for creative work, private studio space, living accommodations, meals prepared by a professional chef, a stipend, and the inspiring setting of the High Plains. Each fellowship also includes a $2,000 award and the opportunity to share work publicly through a featured exhibition in the Ucross Art Gallery, a reading, or a performance.
Established in 2018 with initial support from The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, the fellowship began by serving Native American visual artists. In 2020, following the success of its first two years, Ucross received funding from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) to continue the program and expand it to include Native American writers. In 2024, additional NEA funding further extended the fellowship’s reach to support Native American performers, reflecting Ucross’s ongoing commitment to amplifying Indigenous voices across disciplines.
