Love Peace and Pursue Peace - Ohev Shalom v'Rodeph Shalom (Pirkei Avot 1:12)
This open call to professional artists is sponsored by the Philadelphia Museum for Jewish Art (PMJA), located since 1975 within Congregation Rodeph Shalom, 615 North Broad Street, Philadelphia, PA 19123.
Submission deadline: February 15th, 2027.
Open Call to Professional Artists on the theme of loving and pursuing peace.
Following its closure during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Philadelphia Museum for Jewish Art has
sponsored three previous Open Call Exhibitions, all of which included artists of diverse
backgrounds and brought a renewed vision for community and greater attendance to
our vibrant urban gallery.
Our goal with this open call is to continue our now annual tradition of inviting artists from all faiths and backgrounds to submit original artwork in response to our theme; this year, the Hebrew commandment to love peace and pursue it. In these days of aggression throughout the world, pursuing peace is one of the most important actions we can take as a community. We must work together to create the change we wish to see in our world. We call for artists to submit work that embodies the Love and Pursuit of Peace.
Jurors
A PMJA exhibition committee will be jurying the submissions and will select artworks that respond best to the theme and also work in dialogue as an exhibition. We are pleased to announce that Ruth Fine will again serve as lead curator. Fine was a curator for the National Gallery of Art for four decades. She is now continuing to work independently.
Accepted Work must be physically delivered to Rodeph Shalom on either Monday March 1 or Tuesday March 2 or shipped to arrive NO LATER THAN Thursday March 4. Any shipped work must include appropriate return postage and be packed to withstand round-trip travel. Artists will be forwarded the necessary forms for loan and insurance purposes and they should be completed prior to drop off or shipping.
For Artists
The arts invite us to a much-valued place to gain new insights and form new understandings with one another, which is consistent with PMJA’s mission of illuminating Jewish values that embrace openness and inclusivity and establish strong community outreach. In offering a range of interpretations of this essential theme, Love Peace and Pursue Peace, we intend for the exhibition to be a place of conversation and community. The opening reception for the exhibition will be on April 1, 2027; artists and their guests are welcome to this reception. Weekly times and days for visiting the exhibition will be provided at a later date. Visits to the galleries can also be made by appointment by emailing [email protected].
