This is the largest of four paintings I have done of this beautiful farm just below the Canadian border in Vermont. And this painting is a favorite of mine. Painting large has it's challenges and I pushed myself to create a piece that had a lot of interest and detail while still conveying the magic of early morning light on this iconic set of barns.
The detail in the foreground had to be such that it did not detract or pull the eye away from the main subject, and balancing the large maple tree and the farm, with open space to the left kept me thinking and rethinking the composition. In the end I kept the composition just as it appears when standing in this spot and the finished piece feels like it has the balance necessary. The bright red of the shed on the left provides the weight needed to offset the largely right-sided composition. I think it works, and I love the result.
