Autumn in Vermont is challenging to paint since the amount of color everywhere can be overwhelming. At times, some of the trees change more quickly than others creating these islands of color. Of course there is still plenty of color all around but maybe not as intense.
I'm reminded of a story about when one prominent artist viewed a painting by the renowned Emile Gruppe in Autumn. The amount of color, oranges and reds, was very prominent, leading this artist to proclaim "Looks like someone butchered a moose!". This scene is one of those times when a concentration of color existed in one spot while nearby it was less pronounced. Hence the title "Island of Color". (no actual moose were harmed in either this painting or the one described ) :-)
