I don't know what it is about this past couple of years but the number of stunning sunsets has been noticeably on the increase. I often try to capture them, but sunsets are notoriously difficult to capture on camera. So for this piece I mostly relied on memories of sunsets. I wanted the light and color to be the star, but I also wanted some motion and the rising birds seemed like the right addition. The only other decision to make was whether to anchor the bottom of the piece with some silhouetted trees or distant hills. I went with the trees, in just one corner, to ground the piece without overwhelming it.
