My interdisciplinary practice investigates the social and linguistic constructs that shape identity, history, and collective memory in the United States.
MessageThis assemblage transforms decorative domestic materials into a meditation on detention, concealment, and control. Layered floral patterns evoke comfort, nostalgia, and the mythology of home, while a suspended mesh garment suggests an abandoned uniform, evidence bag, or empty skin. Emerging from beneath it, an alligator appears both predator and captive, its mouth crowded with brightly colored objects that imply consumption, restriction, and silenced speech.
Referencing the detainment center Alligator Alcatraz,” the work examines how confinement is imagined, staged, and normalized within American culture. Beauty and violence coexist uneasily, revealing how familiar and decorative surfaces can obscure systems of exclusion, captivity, and power.
