I wanted to capture some complicated feelings I was having at the moment when I painted this. I was a US Soldier living in Germany and, due to an administrative error in the Army’s part, I was geographically separated from my wife and my pay was significantly cut to that of a single Soldier.
Trying to navigate this new environment and get it fixed, I spent a year feeling lost. Knowing I was facing a huge mental health issue due to the stress, I returned to art as a means of self-care and expression such as with this painting while I continued to perform my duties and attempt to get my orders fixed and my wife to Germany. It should also be noted that after a year and with help from the Inspector General team and new super visors after I transferred to a new unit, things were finally made right.
