The painting is included here in the portrait show because of who isn't in it yet: this is a portrait of waiting, of a child not yet arrived and not yet available to be painted. McClung captures the anticipation of those final months before motherhood, with all the small preparations made for someone she had not yet met. It is one of her best and most important works, full of love for a child still on his way.
