This 1969 oil painting shows the empty crib McClung prepared in their Birmingham, Alabama apartment as she waited for her son, Frank, to be born. This 1969 oil painting shows the empty crib McClung prepared in their Birmingham, Alabama apartment as she waited for her son, Frank, to be born. A mobile hangs above the crib on the left, the curtains are pulled back to let in the green light of the trees outside, and on the right she has decorated the wall with colorful magazine clippings, the kind of homemade wallpaper a young mother makes to ready a room. The painting is included here in the portrait show because of who isn't in it yet: this is a portrait of waiting, of a child not yet arrived and not yet available to be painted. McClung captures the anticipation of those final months before motherhood, with all the small preparations made for someone she had not yet met. It is one of her best and most important works, full of love for a child still on his way.
