This 1962 oil painting shows a woman reclining in deep blues and greens, her head resting on her hand, with a vase of flowers just to her left. McClung painted this in Birmingham, Alabama, early in her career after returning home from studying at the Art Students League in New York City, during a period when she was searching for her own voice as an artist. You can see the painting straddling two worlds, with the loose, swirling brushwork and bold color choices nodding to the abstract expressionism that was dominant in American art at the time, while the recognizable figure points toward the representational work that would shape the rest of her career. The single warm spot of color in the flower on the left adds a small flicker of light against all that cool blue and green, giving the painting its contemplative mood.
