This 1955 oil portrait shows a young man in a green jacket, his arms resting on a yellow surface as he gazes off to the side. This is McClung's first oil portrait painting, made during her senior year at the University of Alabama. Even as an undergraduate, she shows a strong command of light on the face, careful handling of the hands, and a confident sense of color, with the rich greens of the jacket playing against the warm tones of his skin. It is a remarkable starting point for an artist whose career would include a devotion to portrait painting.
