Wood and acrylic paint
Circle mandala. Cutouts painted with orange, blue, and purple color scheme. Curved, triangular shapes carved on the border of mandala and painted blue and purple. Center of the mandala has a small orange diamond surrounded by four blue lines that are disconnected, but appear as a diamond shape. Southwest design carved out and painted orange directly outside of the blue diamond shape.
The Recycling the Sacred collection is composed of mandalas whose materials were primarily sourced from second hand stores. The artist began collecting variations of wood from second hand stores to later repurpose and give them "a new dignity and life." Many of the patterns used are inspired by ancient native cultures, particularly the basket and pottery designs of the Huhugam. Many of the mandalas take a circle shape, celebrating the Sacred Circle symbol and our place in it.
