About the painting:
My first visit to Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley this past June was a refreshing gift for both mind and body. To escape the summer heat and humidity of Charleston, my husband and I planned a road trip north to Shenandoah National Park, timing it to celebrate our wedding anniversary. For us, there couldn’t have been a better way to mark the occasion than hiking together in the quiet beauty of nature.
On our first full day, we stopped often along the way to admire the layered ridges of the blue-green mountains stretching into the distance. Birdsongs filled the air, adding a gentle soundtrack to the views. I took dozens of photos, eager to capture the serenity and grandeur that surrounded us. I’m so glad I did, because later in our trip, smoke from Canadian wildfires drifted into the region, softening those clear vistas into a hazy veil. The change was striking, and it reminded me how precious each unrepeatable moment is.
That awareness carried into my painting. As I worked, I tried to capture not only the beauty of the scene, but also the feeling of being fully present in it—breathing deeply, celebrating a milestone with my husband, and standing in awe of nature’s vastness. For me, this painting is more than a landscape; it’s a reminder to pause, to cherish joy as it happens, and to never take something as simple as a breathtaking view for granted.
