Lofton’s interest in music is on display in this work. Two flutists, apparently caught up in the melody and enveloped in complex patterns of movement dominate the center of this monochrome composition. The simple narrative and use of shades of sienna, reds, and black colors set the mood that dominates the entire canvas. A complex overlap of patterning creates visual interest within the monochromatic piece. The interlocking figures’ flutes create diagonals to break up the vertical emphasis in a unique way.
