The image of the “family” is frequently used by artists for personal and creative reasons. The family theme is seen in many of Picasso’s canvases. Lofton was abandoned by his immediate family and “adopted” by an aunt and uncle. Later on, he was forced to move back with his father after the death of his uncle. This group is tightly constructed and intertwined with shapes, decoration and colors. The artist has mask-like faces on each figure to “hide the identity” of the persons or to make them universal. But more importantly, the group is presented as an entity of interlocking shapes, representing a unity in which is desired.
This work includes frame and certificate of authenticity.
