Lofton’s compositions are often dominated by the placement of large figures in the center of the painting. The use of musical instruments is also important visual imagery. Lofton enjoyed jazz music and often went to see famous musical acts in clubs in New York in his early years. In this work, large areas of sienna browns and black are relieved by small areas of greens, fuchsia, and blues. Balance is achieved by a strict geometric background overlaid with a large curvi-linear form.
