A group of individuals are portrayed in a series of repetitive shapes across the canvas in different poses, offering visual interest to the viewer. Each masked figure, isolated by blocks of different colors that separate them, is engaged in various activities, none of which connects them to each other. Like the work of an illustrator, Lofton gives us visual shorthand to guide us to the meaning of the subject matter. These separate color blocks provide us with visual evidence of our modern condition—alienation. As human beings, we have lost our connection with each other in so many ways; socially, politically, and economically. We all exist in different spaces separated by our own social and economic mobility. This work is timeless in that alienation is a constant condition of modern life. This theme is not new but has been famously explored by such artists as Edward Hopper and Huey Lee-Smith in their works.
