Holding the Void is carved from a single block of basalt, its seamless oval shape evoking the geometry of planetary motion and the symbolic weight of the circle. Holt’s precision carving creates a form that feels both ancient and contemporary, a distilled shape that could be equally at home in a prehistoric site or a minimalist gallery. The deep black surface absorbs light, heightening its presence while recalling the void of space and the solidity of earthbound stone. The work balances on its narrowest point, creating a sense of poised stillness and latent movement. Holt’s practice often explores how simple forms can hold complex associations, from the cosmological to the geological.
