One recent Sunday morning plein air excursion with my Bay Area group was at Horseshoe Cove in Sausalito. This park is located near the base of the Golden Gate and has a beautiful view of the San Francisco skyline. The weather in the Bay Area is usually pretty mild, but paintings along the bay are not for the faint of heart. The strong marine winds can quickly chill you to the core, creating unsteady hands and also causing you to leave well before the painting is finished.
Of course, rather than finding a more sheltered spot to paint, I set up right along the shore. The rocky shore in the foreground created a lovely curve leading the eye to the dramatic cliff. A single person stands at the top of the cliff, overlooking the bay and giving a sense of scale. Without this one person, the size of the cliffs and rocks would be diminished. In the background is the island of Alcatraz, covered in a heavy layer of fog typical of SF.
The painting can be purchased framed or unframed. The framed version features a flat black contemporary frame with an inner gold lip. It is wired on the back and ready for hanging.
