This area of San Francisco, Post Street headed towards Union Square, was familiar to me when I lived there. At this time, many of my art classes were held within a few blocks of this intersection, and I found myself walking down these streets at all times in the day and night in all sorts of weather. The early evening light in this painting was dramatically changed by a misty and rainy atmosphere. I loved how the buildings in the distance were still light, bringing a beautiful silhouette of the signs on the right. As I composed the painting, I purposefully created three distinct value groups, which can be seen by squinting your eyes: the right side is very dark, the middle passage is filled with light, and the left side is a middle dark value. This way your eyes zigzag down through the light middle section first as two darker sections hug it.
