Plus Minus, 2001, is a large painting that Caspar produced in the early years of the new millennium in response to the illusionary nature of images on the television screen. At the time, he was interested in the “connections between the TV and our much older desire to understand the world through visual models”, although he was keen to emphasise the artificial nature of the medium and the “incomplete and often dubious” information it provides. In hindsight, Caspar’s concerns prefigured a shift in society’s relationship with media and information, making this painting highly significant today.
