Stuart Elliott’s ‘Blue Obstacle’ conjures a dystopian landscape. The structures and facilities depicted in ‘Blue Obstacle’ and ‘Red Obstacle’ link to Elliott’s ongoing concerns with that of fakeology, that is, the development of utterly fictional museum-like artifacts and images.

The heavily detailed frame holds an industrial gothic feel. The structure, or ‘obstacle’ presented in the work holds a dominant but cold and impenetrable facade. The title hints towards the facility presented in the work; an obstacle is ‘a thing that blocks one's way or prevents or hinders progress’ which leaves the viewer open to considering multiple narratives.

An important work by a well-known and respected WA artist. All of Stuart’s work comments on today’s society.
