"...venerated in Rome in the Most Holy Basilica of St. Peter."
One of a series of relics commemorating an occurrence in 1849 at St. Peter's Basilica where Veronica’s Veil became very vivid and glowed for 3 hours in front of all present. Subsequently, it was customary to display the veil on Passion Sunday for veneration to the public.
Each year, detailed copies were created of Veronica’s veil (usually about 15″ x 12″), then touched to the original veil, to a relic of the true cross, and to the spear that pierced Christ’s side. From there, a text inscription was placed at the bottom (or on the back) of the relic, and a wax seal placed on each.
The present relic has authentication on the observe side. It includes the date of authentication (12 Apr 1883) and name and year of pontificate of the current Pope (Leo XIII), with a blue stamp and a red wax seal on both front and back.
