The title "Throne of Mercy", sometimes also called "Throne of Grace" (see Hebrews 4: 14-16) or "Mercy Seat" can be found in illustrations as early as the 12th century. In one image, it tells three key stories ("mysteries") at the heart of Christianity: the Transcendent Trinity (One God, who is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit), the Mystery of the Incarnation (the Transcendent Son who is also fully human), and the Paschal Mystery (the Incarnate Son who suffered to redeem humanity).
