A surrealist painter, Vyletal based this image on "Christ of St. John of the Cross," by Salvador Dali, with whom he developed a friendship during his lifetime. His major influences were surrealism and paintings by North Renaissance old masters. He was married to the artist and award winning poster designer Olga Poláčková-Vyleťalová. The poster brings together not only the influences of surrealists like Dail, but also Vyletal's interest in the masters of Northern Renaissance. The face of the woman superimposed upon the altarcloth in the lower third of the poster is reminiscent of one of the women in the center panel of the Crucifixion Tryptich (1443-1445, Brussels) by Rogier van der Weyden.
