Imp. Aussel, Paris; French Grande poster. French release of the Mexican film by Luis Bunuel. Nearly every legendary filmmaker has tackled biblical or religious subject matter and even surrealist Luis Buñuel is no exception. Nazarín is his satirical take on the life of Jesus, here in the form of a pious priest named Nazarín (Francisco Rabal), who lives in a downtrodden corner of turn-of-the-century Mexico. Nazarín takes in mentally ill Beatriz (Marga López) and her prostitute sister, Andara (Rita Macedo). At odds with the other members of his clergy, he decides to go on a religious journey with the two women, but manages to accidentally alienate or ruin almost everyone he meets. As Nazarín attempts to bring goodwill and faith to a decaying society, he's met with scorn, suspicion and persecution.
This tasteful, restrained French version of the poster highlights its 1959 Cannes Film Festival award.
