Based on the novel by Umberto Eco, this film adaptation starred Sean Connery as a Franciscan friar (aptly named William of Baskerville) called to solve a deadly mystery at a medieval monastery. A young Christian Slater stars as his apprentice and F. Murray Abraham as his rival, Bernardo Gui, a Dominican priest and representative of the Inquisition. This poster, a classic example of a 1980s aesthetic, was created by artist and illustrator Drew Struzan, whose airbrush style would illustrate numerous blockbuster posters in the 80s and 90s. In 2014, Struzan won the Saul Bass Award for outstanding poster design.
