Avco Embassy Pictures, Corp. 76/67. This poster is for the edited-down, theatrical version of the original Italian/British co-production of a six-hour mini-series entitled Moses the Lawgiver. Directed by Gianfranco di Bosio, it starred Burt Lancaster as Moses, Irene Papas as his wife Zipporah, and Lancaster’s son William as the young Moses. The poster casts Moses (and his name) as larger than life figures that tower over images of battle between the Egyptians and the Israelites. The poster’s claim to being the “most magnificent human spectacle ever filmed” is within the hyperbolic tradition of Hollywood epic films. Most critics felt the actual series/film, however, paled in comparison to classics of the genre like Cecil B. DeMille’s The Ten Commandments.
