The 2010 restoration of the original 1923 Fritz Lang production. This poster was created for the 2010 release of the restoration of Fritz Lang’s 1927 silent science fiction masterpiece. The original film had undergone considerable cuts when it was released internationally in the 1920s. Over time, pieces of the film were found and added to various home video releases. In 2008, an almost complete copy of the film was found in a film archive in Argentina, allowing 95% of the original film to be shown. The characters, themes, and striking Art Deco design of Metropolis have had tremendous cultural influence, including science fiction films and television, advertisements, and music videos. The film deals with issues that are still part of modern culture, including the division between labor and capital, the promise and peril of artificial intelligence, and the use of science for good and for evil.
