Century Films Production. Production of independent studio Cathedral Films, founded by Episcopal clergyman James K. Friedrich. This was the first English language film portraying the life of Christ with full sound and color. It tells the story of the life of Christ through the perspective of a fictional zealot, Zadok (Lee. J. Cobb). James Griffith plays Judas and Joanne Dru plays Mary Magdalene. Robert Wilson stars as The Christ. The film was noted for its relative restraint compared to most Hollywood biblical epics. It presaged the resurrection of Hollywood Jesus films, including King of Kings (1961) and The Greatest Story Ever Told (1965). It was the last film of prolific Hollywood director Irving Pichel.
