This type of railroad signal is rapidly disappearing. Commonly called "target" signals, they are being replaced with the next generation of signals, informally referred to as "Darth Vaders." One look at one and you'll see why. I like the implied vigilance of a railroad signal, but when it is dark, what is it guarding? Has this rail line been torn up? Where are we going, anyway? And how did we end up in this hand basket?
