RICHMOND — 1708 Gallery’s 16th Annual InLight will take place Friday, November 3rd and Saturday, November 4, 2023 along the 200 to 400 blocks of West Broad Street in Richmond, Virginia’s downtown Arts District. InLight is 1708 Gallery’s annual two-night exhibition of light-based contemporary public art that moves to a new location each year. Past sites have included Bryan Park, Chimborazo Park, Great Shiplock Park, and the sculpture garden and grounds of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.
In recent years, InLight has pushed the boundaries of its original form – a light-based media festival – to meaningfully engage notions of place and new modes of creativity and presentation in contemporary art. Reflection and Refraction honors InLight's fifteen-year history, its roots as a light-based festival, and its present and future as a contemporary art exhibition of site-specific, multimedia works in the public sphere. Just as InLight's form has changed and dispersed – refracted – so have the blocks surrounding 1708 Gallery. Reflection and Refraction brings InLight home to 1708 Gallery and the surrounding businesses to highlight how art continues to activate and animate one of Richmond's main arteries and thriving areas – downtown Broad Street.
For this year’s exhibition, 1708 invites regional, national, and international artists working in all media and disciplines to submit entries that engage with and respond to Reflection and Refraction and that imagine new media and installation possibilities to honor the past, present, and future of InLight.
Artists are invited to propose projects that engage with and expand upon the histories and activities that comprise InLight, as well as Broad Street's past, present, and future. These include the industrial, economic, and racial histories of downtown Richmond and their legacies; public transit and mobility; regional and commercial architectures and their many styles; the role of public art in the upper South; and the significance of Broad Street's surrounding communities.
The curatorial team for InLight 2023 is especially interested in proposals that address ideas around place making and play as well gathering and dwelling. The team is likewise interested in future-thinking projects that reimagine Broad Street’s locality and its potential beyond the past and present.
Artists, Collectives, and Community Organizations are encouraged to apply.
Deadline to apply: July 5, 2023
SELECTED ARTISTS AND COMMUNITY GROUPS RECEIVE
An honorarium of $1,000 per project
Significant production and technical support
Support includes technical expertise and production equipment such as large format projectors and sound systems and/or fabrication or material assistance
Recognition and inclusion in all InLight media
SELECTED ARTISTS AND COMMUNITY GROUPS GUIDELINES
Artists are responsible for the installation and removal of artwork before and after exhibition. Additional support can be provided upon request and communication with the gallery.
Additional insurance coverage (1708 will provide basic insurance) may be required, to be determined in consultation with 1708 Gallery.
All projects must be installed in a safe manner, and abide by all by-laws, laws, and safety standards, to be assessed and evaluated in consultation with 1708 Gallery (for example, electrical wiring must meet electrical safety standards).
Artists grant permission to 1708 Gallery to reproduce entries for the purposes of publicity and education unless otherwise noted on the entry form. Please include photo credit where it differs from the artist's name.
InLight 2023 is curated by Dr. Tiffany E. Barber and Ra-Twoine Fields.

- Location: Los Angeles, CA
Cosmic Bodies & Beneath the Horizon is a dual group show organized by 2023 CalArts REEF artists-in-residence, Caleb Craig and Dongpu Ling.
Beneath the Horizon is a group exhibition merging the coastal diving community and emerging artists in order to explore the ocean as a vital part of our ecosystem. We are challenging artists to reflect on the ocean’s significance in providing food and resources and the implications of continuing our current environmental policies worldwide. We encourage artists to consider the impact of climate change and other environmental factors on the ocean, as well as the effects of human behavior on the ocean and marine life. This exhibition aims to use art as a tool to inspire and encourage viewers to reflect on our relationship with the ocean and the potential ways art might be used to mitigate the serious implications of continuing with our current environmental policies worldwide.
Cosmic Bodies is an exhibition inviting artists to respond to the body as cosmic – defined in Legacy Russell’s “Glitch Feminism” as “infinitely vast”. We challenge artists to submit work that considers bodies that encrypt, stitch, camouflage, and defy boundaries. We encourage artists to consider various ways of tracing, representing, erasing, choreographing, and exploring human and more than human bodies. We invite work dealing with microscopic and macroscopic body ecologies, traces, paradoxes, points of contact, and porosity.
Selected works will be exhibited at The Reef, Maker City LA in October, 2023. We are looking for works demonstrating high creativity, technical skill, and conceptual depth. Please note that all works must be original and created within the last two years.

Silverwood Park invites artists who are at least 18 years old to submit work to be considered for a juried exhibition Drift. Juror: Tess Beck. Deadline: August 12, 2023.
Description of Exhibition
Monumental sand dunes, boats on the water, smoke from wildfires, displacement due to environmental crisis… We observe constant states of drift, some exacerbated by human activity. The word drift refers to movement driven by an outside force. What does it mean to be moved or carried without guidance or control? When we drift, we are reminded of our ability to adapt, change, and intervene. Engaging with environmental challenges provides an opportunity to refresh our perspective and curiosity and set our course. We invite artists to submit work that explores drift as it relates to the natural world.
Work can be 2-D or 3-D, representational or abstract. 3-D work must fit on a 15” x 15” pedestal or be freestanding or suspended.
About the Juror
Tessa Beck is a consultant and independent curator based in Fargo, ND and Minneapolis, MN. Her work is centered around contemporary art and democratizing arts access for rural populations. What is art in the 21st century?
The discourse on the nature of art in the 21st century has never been more intriguing. While some creators remain firmly rooted in the traditions of their craft, others boldly venture into uncharted territories, invoking a constant debate around the central question - What Is Art? What makes it valuable?
In the modern art world, it's evident that success doesn't adhere to a single style or approach. The diverse paths taken by some of the world's most renowned and affluent artists underscore the idea that every unique style of art can become valuable.
'Art' is not an easily defined concept. This is why we've invited two of the world's leading art thinkers to share their insights at the opening event of this exhibition on the 8th of September:
Yuxi Wang, International Project Director from Shanghai Himalayas Museum, and Anthony Fawcett, art critic and historian from Oxford University.
Yuxi Wang's vast experience as an International Project Director at a renowned museum equips her with a deep understanding of global art trends and practices. Her insights will be invaluable, providing us a unique perspective on the diverse world of contemporary art.
A highly respected art critic and historian, Anthony Fawcett is renowned for his collaborations with iconic artists such as Man Ray, John Lennon, Yoko Ono, and Andy Warhol. His significant contributions to the "Anthony Fawcett Archive" project with the Tate Gallery further enhance his status. His insights into "What Is Art?" are sure to be invaluable.
This exhibition is designed not merely to showcase art but to stimulate conversation between divergent paths within contemporary art. The aim is to prove that success in the art world is not a monolithic concept but a spectrum of possibilities, each as valid and valuable as the next.

The School of Performance, Visualization and Fine Arts at Texas A&M University and the Arts Council of the Brazos Valley announce a call for work for Aberrant Creativity, a juried, international art exhibition.
Donna Harraway, in her “Cyborg Manifesto” (1985) wrote: “The machine is not an it to be animated, worshiped and dominated. The machine is us, our processes, an aspect of our embodiment. We can be responsible for machines; they do not dominate or threaten us. We are responsible for boundaries; we are they.”
With this exhibition, we want to create a space to explore the boundaries between our machines and ourselves; an opportunity for artists to challenge AI, to seduce AI into creative partnership, or lead it astray into play and joy. We hope to encourage responsible artistic experiments in embodiment and subversion, invention and hacking, community and connection between the human and the machine, and to exhibit these endeavors as opportunities to enter a strange new world.
Alongside the physical exhibition, there will be a virtual twin hosted online. The virtual exhibition will be live one week after the physical exhibition has opened. The link will be made public and shared at the time of the installation.
